Fosselyhgen Lodge “SYTTENDE MAI” MEETING
Program: "Olav Eide - A Stranded Norwegian Maritime Sailer"
Olav Eide was living in Chicago with his uncle and aunt when he became eligible to enlist in the U.S. Army in December 1942. Since he was fluent in Norwegian, he was sent to join an ethnic battalion, the 99th Viking Battalion, a part of the 10th Mountain Infantry Division at Camp Hale, Colorado. The 99th Battalion, a separate ethic Norwegianspeaking unit, consisted of 1000 soldiers who were either stranded Norwegian maritime sailors or first-generation Norwegian-Americans. The 10th Division was being trained for future action in Nazi-occupied Norway.
